The Modern World (c. 1900 to the present)
Ah, the 20th Century-- it starts with a bang (literally, whether you want that to be the Boer War in South Africa or the Boxer Rebellion in China), develops into bigger bangs (that would be the Great War, World War II, and in a different way, the Great Depression), and then evolves into a Cold War-- it would've been chillier without the threat of nuclear war (because "chilly" is the last thing an a-bomb is). At the same time, we see the end of the second wave of the Industrial Revolution as well as the end of the Age of Imperialism-- which means we get decolonization, and the global economy expands its focus. The gap between wealthy (developed) countries and poor (un- or under-developed) countries gets wider, and cultural clashes worsen-- witness the terrorist activity of the 21st century. And yet, there's so much promise: the Space Race (we got to the moon! We're going to Mars?!?), vaccinations, the Internet ... can these innovations help us solve the problems which emerged in the 20th century and before?
